10 Country Songs About Growing Old

To some extent, these 10 country songs about growing old are not all that excited about aging. However, have you ever noticed how pop and rock singers, who no longer top the charts in their respective genres, sometimes switch to country? It's somewhat okay to age in country music, but if you're a hot female singer, you cannot be popular forever. The only possible exception is Cher.

1. "I've Aged Twenty Years In Five" George Jones George Jones has struggled with the bottle over the years and sung many country songs that detail his struggles. He may well have aged 25 years during a five-year period. Because he's lived it, we believe him.
   

2. "We'll Meet Again" Johnny Cash In this song, Johnny Cash is counting on a World War II reunion in heaven. This man grew old quickly right before our eyes. Yet, he still made great music. In fact, he may be in the middle of his heavenly reunions right now.
   

3. "A Woman Half My Age" Kitty Wells Kitty Wells had a lot of spunk. This country song shows off her spunk, too. It was not a good idea to mess with her.
   

4. "In Our Old Age" Kenny Rogers It's not fair. Kenny Rogers was prematurely gray. He could have sung this country song even in his young age. He didn't, of course.
   

5. "Older Guys" Amy Rigby Let's hear it for older guys! Amy Rigby sings a country song that all older men should be glad about. It's a little freaky to imagine older guys getting it on with younger gals, but it's better than nothing.   
   

6. "Old Man" Neil Young Neil Young is now the old man he sang about in this song. This was back when he was his last name: young. Now that he's growing old, he could sing the song to himself. Please don't encourage that.
   

7. "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane" Flatt and Scruggs Just hope you have enough energy to demand someone hand you down your walking cane when you get to be that age. With the hip-replacement surgery these days, folks are using fewer walking canes than they used to. Hand them down their HMO card, instead.
   

8. "Old and In The Way" Hazel Dickens "Just remember when you're young / That to you, the time will come / When you're old and only in the way." Ain't that the truth? It's hard to imagine growing old and being in the way. But as this country song explains, it happens to everyone eventually.
   

9. "When Our Old Age Pension Check Comes to Our Door" Merle Haggard Merle Haggard always sings country songs about real life. But music artists don't get pension checks, so he must have been imagining somebody else. He's aging quite well, by the way. He still writes great country songs and sings them as only he can.
   

10. "As Good As I Once Was" Toby Keith Toby Keith sure likes to brag. Let's see if he talks this way when he's 64 and growing old himself. He and The Dixie Chicks can duke it out at the old people's home.
