When traveling to particularly cold climates, it's important to know how to stay warm camping.  Extremely cold temperatures can result in serious health problems such as frostbite and hypothermia.

  1. Dress Appropriately Make sure to have enough warm clothes to last through the camping trip.  Take into consideration the expected temperatures.  Bring at least one well insulated, waterproof coat or parka.  Bring long, warm pants, shirts, gloves, scarves, hats, waterproof shoes, socks and long underwear.  Hats are one of the most essential clothing pieces to prevent heat loss.  This is because the majority of body heat is lost through the head.  It's also a good idea to find a hat that covers your ears. It's very helpful to have multiple layers of clothing in order to stay as warm as possible.
  2. Stay Dry at All Costs In order to stay warm when camping it is extremely important to stay dry.  That is why waterproof outer garments are so essential to staying warm.  While physical activity and exertion can be very helpful to get warm, it is important not to sweat.  Sweat is the body's natural response and meant to cool the body down.  The water created by perspiring will end up in making your body temperature cooler than before.  If you are physically exerting yourself to the point of perspiration, it is a good idea to remove some layers of clothes in order to regulate body temperature.
  3. Staying Warm While Camping at Night Finding the best way to sleep warmly while camping can be a tricky situation.  It can be helpful to purchase a space heater if your campsite has electricity.  However, you must be extremely careful, as space heaters can be a major fire hazard.  If your campsite does not have electricity then there are several points to keep in mind.  It is very important to sleep on top of a well-insulated pad in order to prevent loss of body heat.  What is under your body is actually more important than what's on top.  It's a good idea to cover the top of the head while sleeping, to prevent heat loss.  It is also important not to sleep in too many layers.  If your body starts to sweat in your sleep, it will result in extreme body temperature loss.  Also make sure your clothes and sleeping bag are completely dry before sleeping.
